Dry Needling

Dry Needling assists with decreasing local muscular pain and improving function through the restoration of a muscle's ability to lengthen and shorten normally by releasing myofascial trigger points.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling uses “dry” needles (one without any medication) inserted into areas of muscle. It is very effective in relieving local muscular pain and improving muscle function by restoring the muscle’s ability to lengthen and shorten normally.  Dry needling does not replace a hands on therapy, the needles only stay in for five to eight minutes, with hands on techniques completing the rest of the treatment.

Dry needling releases Myofascial trigger points in the muscles, commonly known as “knots” and refers to a group of muscles that have shortened when activated but have not returned to their normal length afterwards. Knotted muscles can develop for a number of reasons including injury, sport, unexpected or sudden movements, poor sustained posture, nutritional deficiencies, stress or illness.

What should I expect from Dry Needling?

Dry needling does not replace a hands on therapy, the needles only stay in for five to eight minutes, with hands on techniques from your Massage Therapist or Osteopath completing the rest of the treatment.

The needles are the same as acupuncture needles and various lengths are used depending on which muscle is being treated.  The area is sterilised first and then a small, sterile needle is inserted in or near the pain area.  The needles are very small and you feel a small prick to the skin, sometimes followed by a light, dull ache.  After the treatment is completed the needle is removed and discarded.

It is normal to have some muscle soreness after a treatment. Keeping hydrated, gentle movement and applying heat can help reduce the period of soreness. Dry needling patients often require 2-3 sessions for the treatment to be effective.
